When did tapping out become the way to submit?

I was watching Bret/Owen from Mania X yesterday and at one point Bret tapped out to Owen's Sharpshooter. I was when the match kept going until I remembered that they used to do that shyt all the time to build the selling.

So when did it change from a verbal "I submit" to actually tapping out? I assume it was some time after 1996 when UFC started to get big but I don't know specifically when it changed.

I don't have a ling on me as I'm on mobile, but it started in either 1997 or 1998 when Ken Shamrock crossed from the UFC to the WWF.

His ankle lock was when the tapping started to be taken as a submission.

Pre Shamrock everyone used to slap the mat as a way of selling how painful the move was

Oddly enough I think it's more respectable that you tap, rather than you say "I Quit/No More" in the WWE Universe. It somehow ruins your cred to the fans if you verbally say it.

Verbal submission just seems like " please stop this guy from whooping my ass"

Yup. The ending of Perfect/Hart at SummerSlam 91 is kind of laughable in hindsight now. Bret barely had the Sharpshooter on for 3 seconds before the ref rang the bell as Perfect was flailing his head around
