When did tapping out become the way to submit?

I was watching Bret/Owen from Mania X yesterday and at one point Bret tapped out to Owen's Sharpshooter. I was :dwillhuh: when the match kept going until I remembered that they used to do that shyt all the time to build the selling.

So when did it change from a verbal "I submit" to actually tapping out? I assume it was some time after 1996 when UFC started to get big but I don't know specifically when it changed.

:youngsabo: Oddly enough I think it's more respectable that you tap, rather than you say "I Quit/No More" in the WWE Universe. It somehow ruins your cred to the fans if you verbally say it.

True. Tapping. = I got caught and will live to fight another day

Verbal submission just seems like " please stop this guy from whooping my ass"

:russ:The old method of nodding your head and spazzing out to submit was pretty hilarious now that I think about it.

Yup. The ending of Perfect/Hart at SummerSlam 91 is kind of laughable in hindsight now. Bret barely had the Sharpshooter on for 3 seconds before the ref rang the bell as Perfect was flailing his head around
