When did the health bar become the norm?

I remember growing up you had 3 lives ..etc... some games like ghouls and ghost you had armor then you lost the life..

A few games had the health bar but it wasn't many .. Now its like the health bar encompasses the 3 life aspect but without having ot start the board over unless you lost all your health and then game is over..

Now its the one health meter and you're done but I was just thinking the other day to myself as my kids was playing something ... when did this become the standard

I tell him don't take damage if you have no rings... he dies like a fukking noob... "I don't wanta play this anymore ", "I wanta try this Streets of Rage game!", I inside.

Bruh if he can't play sonic, he aint gonna do shyt in streets of rage. What I was getting at is even though he was getting the hang of it as soon as he got to a part that wasn't even fukking hard he threw in the towel. And I'm trying to show him but it didn't matter. This wasn't the first time I seen this though, I got a bunch of little cousins and nephews and they all kind of do the same thing as he did.
