When did this biracial thing actually start to kick in ??

I mean for real when I was growing up in Philly if you was light and bright then you would just a light skinned black person.

Even if you have blondish hair or green eyes whatever you would just a "light skinned" black person.

Sometimes, years later I will find out that people had one white parent or one Latino parent or something like that and I never knew it.

I didn't start hearing about biracial still about 10 or maybe 15 years ago.

When did this lightskinned black people transform into this new category called biracials??

Not all lightskin black people are biracial. Not all dark skin black people are mono-racial.

It's simple math, if you have one black parent and one non-black parent you're biracial.

So where does culture play into this ? I mean, it's not too many people will blacker than Frederick Douglass and he had at least one white parent and probably a few more down the line.

We going to include him as biracial because, I don't think they're too many black Americans who are prominent in history who are more quintessentially black American than him.

They were never called "bi-racial" they were just black. Sometimes they were called mixed or lightbright or redbone. But they were apart of blackness and accepted as such. It's only recently they've tried to separate. That's his point.

It was always around since post colonialism from what I know but largely in places like the west indies were you have a color heirachy Octaroons, Quadroons, Mulattoes , Sacatra etc. In the states it was either you was black/white or native.

I understand that about the Caribbean and Latin America or whatever. But I'm talking about within the last 15 to 20 years this whole biracial movement that's been going on.

It's like all of the sudden now somebody that's light brown is now no longer black.

I'm damn near 40 and for most of my life the lightest, brightest and yellowest is people was still considered black I'm trying to figure out when and where this break began ?

My thing is this. If you biracial and you are proud of your African ancestry and say you are black and pro-black like Kaepernick then yeah you black. Malcolm X's mom was biracial and was pro black.

Yeah I know what you're talking about it's different here in the states, I think when identity politics became the social norm is when it started. And in some instances it was ingrained like someone I knew was biracial but was rased solely by her white mother who didn't allow for her daughter to be called black and she actually complained to the school we went to that had her listed as black and not biracial.

There seems to have been a Schism within the last 10-15 years. Some biracials are crazy black and proud others,"really, not so much...

Then this must be more common than I thought. Because when I went to school you can count the biracial kids on your finger. Yeah you had a gang of light and bright Negroes.

Maybe in some other country. where I come from (Philadelphia, PA) from they were called light-skinned black people.

If it's true that he had a cac father then, ya he's biracial. You can call him black you're not technically wrong.
