true but wack n1ggas wasn't getting 2 million dollar deals tho.

Sh1t would be like Jungle (Nas's brother) or one of 2pac's random Outlaw members getting a huge mainstream label deal in the 90s, sh1t just wasn't gonna happen.

but now it's more possible for them to get on than someone who is actually talented :ehh:

really? there's been wackness in every generation in every genre of music. this aint is a new phenomenon

I understand what nikkas are sayin about the south but that's no excuse for New York nikkas fallin off the map and biting the popular sound. Ya'll are forgetting there was a time when Lil Jon,Luda,TI were goin platinum alongside 50 Cent,Banks,Cam'ron etc in the mid 2000's.

The Wrong Side of the Tracks

Never heard of these songs first of all.

Then you don't know hip-hop history. All those tracks were HUGE and got played consistently along with Eric B & Rakim, NWA, EPMD, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Boogie Down Productions, Whodini, etc.......

J. J. Fad gained popularity with the new line-up that included rappers: MC J.B. (Juana Burns), Baby-D (Dania Birks), and Sassy C. (Michelle Franklin). Hailing from Los Angeles, California, the group were one of the original Ruthless Records acts signed by Eazy-E, and they sold 400,000 copies of their 1987 single "Supersonic" independently before Eazy and Jerry Heller had managed to secure a major label recording contract.

Signing the act to Atco Records, both the single "Supersonic" and the album Supersonic went platinum. The album was produced by Dr. Dre and DJ Yella with Arabian Prince, shortly before Dre and Yella gained national fame with N.W.A. J. J. Fad were the first female rap group to earn a Grammy nomination and have a record reach platinum status. Unlike many West Coast rappers of the day, their producers made J.J. Fad sound easily accessible to a pop audience by including many electro elements throughout.

'Wackness' has ALWAYS been acceptable, but it was a lot more sporadic in the 80's than now.

I wont try and act like I can pinpoint exactly when wackness became acceptable but I will say this. There is a negative correlation between the moral decline of society as a whole and the decline of hiphop.

Black music has always more so been about the feeling, funk, groove whatever you wanna call it than about depth.

Except before Hammer and Vanilla Ice were not the norm and were clowned by hip-hop heads and their peers even though they sold millions to whites and casual listeners. Today the Hammers get praised. In fact it seems like the blacks flock to theHammers and the only ones checking for mc's with talent are white people :wtf:

:manny: u got a point. but lets not act like these guys aren't in and out of the system in about 3-4 years. they may be popping right now, but their success never lasts.

large numbers of people may not listen to fashawn, big krit, elzhi, etc but good artists tend to stick around the game for the long run.

i chalk up talentless artists staying around and being praised more due to their personalities. they have twitter, interviews, and the most helpful tool, mixtapes, to keep them in the spotlight.

in the past you had to submit a demo tape to a label and then work on a debut album. that process in and of itself weeded out most of the shytty artists, unless the label was planting someone. but now all u gotta do is upload a mixtape to datpiff and have the world able to d/l your music. and all you really need is 3 or 4 good tracks for people to dikk ride a mixtape.

It's all subjective

Words lost their value. Lyrics don't matter it's all about the beats now. I dare you to listen to some of these acapellas these days.

There's a stickied thread on this forum about a rapper who can barely speak english...

Lets just be real ---- the south completely lowered the creative bar. I love my southern brothas n sistas and its not completely their fault, as the various southern-influenced movements were executively encouraged by record labels, but that music was the culprit.

Crunk, Snap, trap --- hip hop became about "making money" above all else, including artistic quality. Thats just the fact of the matter, and all the artists were very open about this, and almost celebrated the shtty quality of music.

Like I said, the George W Bush era was bad for everything. Cats were doing stupid shyt as long as it made a dollar. In the Obama era, you got cats like J Cole and K Dot blowing up, so there is some hope in the 2010s. The mid-late 00s was one traumatizing time period in music. Especially 2007.

I know the cats you just named and their catalogue backwards in forwards. Perhaps the fact that I dont know those wack joints you previously posted proves my point that they were exceptions, not the rule, and that they are small footnotes in hip hop history. Not anybody we should care about.

There should always be space for mindless party music, or non-serious tracks. The point is when those joints become the norm and the standard. That obviously wasnt the case during that time period.
