even earlier but it wasn’t called the “internet” per se but online gaming did exist and “chatrooms” of sort...I had a C64 in the late 80s/early 90s and a modem...there was some island resort game where you could choose a character on an island resort and talk to ppl in different places...

In '97 in high school. From 2002-05 would use it off & on during college and when I would spend the night at pops house. I didn't get regular home service until '06 because I got tired of going back & forth to the school library on my days off.
