Above the fray.
DJs used to be standard part of recording acts to the point where their names were featured in the stage name of the act, or you knew who they were because they were shouted out on songs.

For example, I cant name who Cube or Nas's djs were. But the other acts around when they came out had djs that you knew.
NWA had Yella, and Main Source had (fukk them) 2 DJs for example.

iLL Will.

The importance of a rapper having a DJ changed once Illmatic dropped, Illmatic changed the standard of how albums were constructed.

Heard Illmatic when it dropped. I remember the picture of Will on the back of the album, but dont remember Nas saying that he used to DJ for him.
