I've always said that hip hop is easy to do, hard to do well. That's why you can have celebrities like Natalie Portman parodying it and what not. You can't really do that with other genres of music such as rock, R&B, etc. as easily. You need to at least have a baseline ability to sing, play instruments, etc. Now there are trash acts in other genres of course but the entry level bar is higher. With hip hop all you need to do is have a beat and talk over it. That's why my standards for it are high. But once labels/people understood that you could get away with being mediocre and make millions from people who have no interest in the artform, only "personalities" rhyming over "hot" beats, it was a wrap as there was no quality control gatekeeping. Just another hustle........
