The 1990s will forever be regarded as one of the greatest American decades of all time. It was the era of Michael Jordan, Micheal Jackson, Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, Bill Clinton, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and numerous of great TV Shows and films.

In terms of hip hop, the 1990s had some of the best albums ever produced, with many of those artists hailing from the West Coast. Much to the surprise of New Yorkers, the West Coast became the leader of hip hop in the '90s. The Album sales prove it.

West Coast Rappers that sold 10 million or more albums within the U.S.:

1. MC Hammer, Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em (10.5 million within U.S., 22 million globally)
2. 2Pac, Greatest Hits (10.1 million)
3. 2Pac, All Eyez on Me (10 million)

Other West Coast rappers of the '90s that sold over 5 million albums within the U.S.:

4. Dr. Dre, 2001 (7.8 million.)
5. Snoop Dogg, Doggystyle (7 million)
6. Dr. Dre, The Chronic (5 million)

East Coast Rappers that sold 10 million or more albums:
1. The Notorious B.I.G., Life After Death (10.2 million)

Other East Coast albums of the '90s that sold over 5 million:
2. DMX, And Then There Was X (6.1 million)
3. Jay Z, Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life (5.3 million)

Real question.

How did the west coast win musically in the 90's when a lot of the most popular music was negative?

The west coast will always be plagued with going the nagative route musically right after the Million Man March.

When Hip Hop was being plagued with negativity after just coming from a consious era , Jeru The Damaja was one of the few speaking against the negative influences plaguing Hip Hop.

I dont remember 1 West Coast rapper taking such a stance. Jeru was basically speaking against the nikka shyt from The West and The east. That in itself is one of the few examples that leans the scales more towards why NYC will always be the dominant factor musically when speaking on 90's Hip Hop.

Dope Preemo Beat.

Insightful lyrics

Ill Flow

Cool video visual that stood out during the Hype Williams era.

Really? Ever heard of Tupac? He was a conscious revolutionary rapper with the goal of bettering all the disadvantaged people. He might have contradicted himself but his end justified the means.

:mindblown:

Dude. u on the 2pac noggin so hard u didnt even pay attention to what said

u posted 2pac songs from 91 and 93.

i'm talking about jeru in 96. :stopitslime:

i dont give a damn what Pac made in 91 or 93...Public Enemy and KRS were already doing that...im talking about 96 when shyt started getting outta control and Pac was leading the bullshyt:camby:

Do not bring up Pac and talk revolutionary bullshyt when in 96 he implicated innocent people in his shooting and threatened to kill kids.

Wasnt no one speaking up against the east west shyt on wax hard body except Jeru.....and u not acknowledging that to go off topic speak on what pac did in 91 and 93 is irrelevant

NO WAY

Look at these delusional nikkaz :mjlol:

The West Coast celebrates the most overrated rapper of all time, 2Pac
Plus this nikka talk about ''oh imma keep it music'' but then cites sales :dahell:
But if y'all dumbass nikkas wanna converse lets do it

LIST of East Coast rappers or rap groups that went at least PLATINUM in the 90's

A Tribe Called Quest - 3 Platinum Albums
Big Pun - 1 Platinum Album
Onyx - 1 Platinum Album
Naughty By Nature - 2 Platinum Albums
Biggie - 1 Album 4x Platinum the other 5x Platinum
Puffy - No Way Out - On September 7, 2000, the album was certified septuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of 7,000,000+ copies in the United States
Jay-Z - 9 Million albums albums sold in the 90's
DMX - Only alive rapper to have 2 No. 1 top 200 records, 6-7 million sold in the 90's

This is not even the whole list :mjlol:
So what the fukk are all y'all nikkaz talkin about :mjlol:

Not only in sales, the East beat the West of the quality of rap and production, if we talk about it ''musically''

DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, RZA, DITC, Havoc, Q-Tip, Easy Mo Bee which is just scratching the surface :mjlol:

What rappers does the West have that can match up to Nas, Jay-Z, Raekwon, Ghostface, Prodigy and Big L? That's again only scratching the surface

Keep in mind that 2Pac is from New York and Kurupt is from Philly :umad:

Y'all only got Dre (even though it's unsure if he produced his greatest work), Cold 187um, DJ Quik, Dat Nikka Daz, Kutmasta Kurt, T-Ray

And don't even start tellin' me that Snoop Dogg, Eazy E and Ice Cube are dope rappers, the nikkaz ain't even write they own shyt :mjlol:

King T better than all of 'em

I agree....but cube wrote majority of his shyt I think til he start letting his protege from the lynch mob start doin a bit.....bit yea this argument is corny and completely false. Lauryn Hill burys about anyone they could out up....the fugees to. I think qtip went plat by himself after vibrant thing......

Busta rhymes wit play wit the Janet Jackson joint and went plat before that wit woohah got you all in check. How many time has wu-tang gone plat. Nas went plat with it was written and stillmatic went after that.....I think nastradamus did too and it sucked:mjlol:........east coast was very heavy in the 90's
