When people commit financial crimes and steal a lot of money, why do they always buy shyt that can easily be confiscated?

the bolded isn't as easy as you think, that being said people are short sighted. If you steal money you can't just put a large amount into a bank account without people becoming suspicious, at least with real estate and jewelry to a degree it can be used to "hide" or "wash" your money (and even with real estate you have to show proof of income)Real estate, cars and jewelry
The feds can easily seize all of it. They don’t think to set up shell companies or simply but gold bars/diamonds.
If I steal $50 million, I’m not buying houses and cars. I will spend more time hiding it in offshore accounts or lock boxes in non extradition countries. Basically if I go to jail, when I come out I will never have to work again.
yep and you always get caught or your super paranoid to the point you can't enjoy anything, as a criminal you have to think when I will get caught, not if, the bolded is the best case scenario.Thats an inefficient use of that much money. Personally i would invest half the money i steal into the district attorney's reelection campaign. Would also throw some money into my state senate incumbent candidate too. At crazy amounts of theft like 50million, you can grease the wheels to give you a golden parachute if you get caught, or to even prevent the fall entirely.
At lower amounts , you pretty much have to stash hard cash somewhere. The feds have a huge financial net ln institutions in every nation on earth[except north korea and iran]. And your foreign accounts will be seized cause no bank on earth wants to be sanctioned by the United States of America.
Ideally, you would bounce before getting caught; but nobody knows how far their run will last. The FOMO eats the souls of most criminals, and i cant blame them. You'd be pissed off if you checked out the game at 20,000$ of theft, when you could have fleeced a billion with no one noticing.
