A hard fought L to Joe and then going to the main roster would be fine in my view.

I hate undefeated gimmicks because it's hard as fukk to book around them once you've made them a thing. Once he's on the main roster just make him lose by fukkery after 1 or 2 feuds, let him get satisfying revenge and be done with it.
