When you look back at the 2010’s era of hip hop, what was great about it???

The first half of the 2010s was one of the best creative peaks of the genre since the 90s. A lot of artists chasing new sounds but still focusing on lyricism and maintaining a clear cultural connection to earlier eras of hip-hop. The blog era gave exposure to a lot of dope underground artists and it was the first time hip-hop culture really became enmeshed with internet culture in a way that felt vital, before it became the fukkery it is now. Once drill took off after Chief Keef and Future started dominating in the second half of the decade it took a nosedive.

Death Grips are kinda trash. Crackhead version of Aphex Twin.
Its the mixture of hip hop and digital hardcore that puts them over the top for me

At least the 5-6 albums i mess with by them

The late 00s were horrible, then the early 2010s were incredible - Kendrick, MBDTF, Odd Future, Drake in his prime, ASAP, Alchemist, Vince Staples... The list is too long to go on. A lot of classics, and a lot of great releases from older artists.

The late 2010s started to fall off and the 2020s are pretty bad to me. Theres still a lot of music that I like, but most of its not in the mainstream.

The rise of trap and deletion of lyricism. I don't see much great about it, but if anyone was a teen during that time, I can understand why they'd think it's the greatest ever. In my opinion, the rise of trap made artists like Kendrick, J Cole, and Drake the Rakim, Kane, G Raps, of their era. And these are all great artists, but cmon now... It's like how Dwight was the best center in the NBA by default for many years.

So…2010-2019….just off the top of my head without digging too deep

GKMC
Big Krit projects
IYRTITL
Rodeo and Astroworld
Beatking with his ORIGINAL Astroworld mixtapes
Lots of Curren$y projects
Various Wiz projects
French Montana’s mixtapes being head and shoulders above the albums he was putting out before 2021.
Three Rick Ross albums
Jay Rock’s third album
Spaceghostpurrp before he crashed out and forgot how to make good beats
ASAP Rocky’s first 3 releases
ASAP Ant solos breaking away from ASAP Mob
Sauce Walka’s rise at the backend of the decade
Roc Marciano igniting Griselda and their affiliates

I could name some more but I’ll stop there. I’ve been eating good, so for people that say stuff like “there is no good hip hop anymore”, we have the most access to music than we’ve ever had, and if you can’t find SOMETHING you’re into, that’s your fault more than anything.

Nah ur issue is it don’t seem like u wasnt plugged into the independent scene. Add to the fact this was prime Kendrick, Cole, Drake years. Joey badass dropped with Pro Era, ASAP Rocky and his crew. Underground scene was refreshed with Marci and Spitta etc etc.
