I've been meaning to make a thread on Come and Get Me for months now. I don't think it's his best album or even top 5 but this very well may be his peak of actual rapping (from Vol 3 through Dynasty his pure rapping skills were insane).

I said it in another thread but this is probably one of my fave albums of his to just rap.

I didn't like the beat change.

at first.

This is one of those songs that just pops in your head at 4 am and remind you how gully you supposed to be.

"I paid the cost to be the boss to floss this hard. :scusthov:
I can recall a year ago, I almost lost this job. :upsetfavre:
All yall remember is the part about me parking the hard(top bentley) :jbhmm:
What about them days I was walking my dogs?:to:
Barking at broads? But the never holla'ed back. :dwillhuh:
And if they did, all they said was

:comeon:

Imagine growing up skinny around them brolic cats. :francis:

Quiet assassin. Demeanor of them college cats. :francis:

Until I got a gat and started loudly busting back. :bustback:

Round the way, nikkas call me "Bobby Boucher" :wtb:

Now, all I hear is whispers of what you gone do to Jay?:gucci:

How you gone stick me up? Take my jewels away? :patrice:

Kidnap and carjack me? Take my cruise away!? :jbhmm:

This such an underrated album to me...There are a couple that definitely go in front of this, but it still ranks better than other Hov projects as well...

I got them:
Reasonable Doubt,
The Blueprint, Vol. 1,
The Black Album,
Vol. 3,
American Gangster,
4:44,
Dynasty,
Blueprint 3,
Blueprint 2
Kingdom Come
MCHG
Vol. 2 HKL
(MCHG & Vol. 2 are interchangable for me)

Towards the bottom for me but it's got some of Jay's best writing on it:

At age nine, saw my first hate crime
Blindfolded, expected to walk a straight line
Mind molded, taught to love yours and hate mine
Climbed over it, at a early age, Jay shined
fukk the system at Lady Justice I blaze nine

I think Jay was expecting this album to be as big as Vol. 2 was, or even bigger. When he was working on the album, he wanted it to be like Thriller where every song was a hit. I don't know if the bootlegging changed that much, but the version that Jay wanted to put out definitely felt bloated. A few tracks ("S. Carter," "Pop 4 Roc") could have been taken off.

Honestly, I thought the album was a near-classic. The production is all over the place, but this is one of Jay's best performances lyrically. I think the fact that it didn't sell like Vol. 2 did is what led to Jay not acknowledging it as much. It was probably supposed to take over 2000 and only one song ("Big Pimpin'") really took off like that.

It has the same problem that some of Nas' later albums do: The track list/sequencing isn't as good as it could be. Some songs feel like they're just there to be there. But some songs ("So Ghetto," "Dope Man," "Come and Get Me," "There’s Been a Murder") are among Jay's best and should be highlighted more.
