there are so many dope rappers that have come after him but during his time, there was no one better at what he did. he is a pioneer and originator of a style. where you had Rakim doing what he was doing, KRS doing him, BDK doing him. Grand Puba is on their level but because of the pro-black and anti-"devil" sentiment him and BN were never popularized as much as they were groundbreaking.
