Is this something that's been around for a long time like 'makin if rain' but became popular in the vernacular later on? I'm just curious

Jay was the first rapper I remember saying it, and it was well before Roc La Familia though. First time I heard him say it was in 1997. Listen to "Who You Wit" And he says "Roc-A-Fella...Pa-pause" a few times on the song
