Where does 'pause' originate?

I been hearing people use pause in a NYC before it hit raps song back in like 98 and it seemed to be everywhere in NY by 99. Like literally you couldn't talk without someone saying "pause" or "no homo" by like 1999.

I'd say it started in Harlem, but can't be sure.
