Where is the line between what is appropriate to make jokes about and what isn't?

You can make fun of anything, as long as you can be both clever about it and not offensive.
The "lines" however, depend on your ability to craft/find the right joke angle for the right person. Making people laugh about their differences and imperfections is an art form. Most people can't do it.

:mjpls:

But essentially, it's possible to make a black man laugh about a slave joke, a rape victim laugh about a rape joke, a fat person laugh about a fat joke and so on...it just depends on circumstances, the type of joke, the personality of the people being joked about and a bunch of other factors. Needless to say, edgy jokes aren't for most people, if you're not comfortable in your abilities as a comedian then be ready for the backlash, because jokes are ultimately a gamble for most people so you can't be mad if it goes wrong.
Take your risks, reap your benefits and accept your losses with class breh :whoo:

It's hard to decide.
But some jokes really come off as malicious. It's one of those things like defining the word "obscene". You really only know it when you see it.
Bill Burr had this rant where he says that people tend to get offended only at the things that affect them.
The skinny people in the audience don't groan at the fat jokes.
The fat people don't groan at the gay jokes.
The gay people don't groan at the Latino jokes.
And so on. No matter how offensive it can be, at times.

But then there's a big (not necessarily huge) difference between being a comedian and just being a funny guy that makes people laugh. The former has to make sure his jokes are more entertaining to a wider audience; the latter has a smaller crowd (two or three friends/strangers) to entertain. I wonder who is more constricted.

Damn...humor really is a complex field.

It's all about delivery.

Even jokes with good intentions will backfrie if done badly.
Like that Colbert tweet making a Ching-Chong joke without the needed context and therefore getting backlash.

It depends on the context, who you're with, what you're saying. Like I know there's certain things I don't joke about with certain friends but it usually works out because the things they don't find funny, I don't find funny either. I know a few people that are just very hilarious and their jokes are never made at the expense of others. Like they can be hysterical without having to punch down. Pretty nice.

Or do you feel there is no line, and humor should encapsulate very subject? Is nothing inappropriate to joke about? :ehh:

Every joke is at someones or somethings expense. Everything can be funny. Just because YOU yourself is offended, don't agree or it affects you personally doesn't mean it isn't funny or shouldn't be joked about. You got to know the line but I try and deliver everything I say in a comedic manner and if someone chooses to be offended, they can be.

Once you start drawing lines about what's ok and what's not, they will always shift because someone will always feel some type of way about being the butt of a joke. Comedy doesn't incite any thing besides laughter. Comedy in the wrong hands (like white folks with Chris Rocks famous bit) can be detrimental but laughter is something that comes naturally. The people that bother me are the ones who laugh but immediately swallow it to try and say something PC. Shut up. If it's funny it's funny, and if it's not it's not. You shouldn't be punished for not being funny because public opinion sorts that shyt out

What's difficult about the question? is there a line in the sand for things you can and cannot joke about...

As for me, the line is extremely blurred and it depends on the person, mentality, and delivery

:heh: Sometimes I wonder if I'm an a$$hole. You said it so much better than me, cuz I was just gonna reply: bytch, are you retarded? :rudy:

Its a lot of factors breh:patrice:...I hate to say anything is off limits cuz sometimes it can just be "too soon" to joke about sumthing, but as time passes it will be funny as shyt....also shyt that I think might be funny when im not personally involved wont be funny if its directed at me,like jokes about my dead family members:wtb:...but jokes about other dead people might be okay if its funny:manny:...depending on your color you would have to be a professional comedian most likely for me to laugh at the race jokes of a white man:wtb:....so if you a regular pedestrian you probably need to chill:comeon:

and oh yeah, mama jokes gon too far?
yo moma jokes are never N OT funny, m y kids be cracking yo moma jokes and i be like :mindblown: do yall not remember yall got the same moma?
