I've always wondered this. What year does the "Old school" era end and the "New School" era begin?

20 Inch rims changed everything so I'd say 2000 was the dawn of new school

Which old school you talking about? If you're talking "today's" music vs "when hip hop was better"...I'd say 2004 and earlier falls in the various buckets of old school, rap made a big shift in 2005 IMO, and that's where we are today. Of course there's real old school, like pioneer rap 79-86, golden era 87-95/96, shiny suit/platinum era 97-04...

Edit: these dates aren't set in stone, I can already see some argumentative poster coming in here on some "the golden era wasn't such and such....:rudy:"

This probably the closest to what I originally thought. I always thought of it as pre-2000 was "Old school" but 2006 and past as "New school" because I personally thought inbetween didn't have the feel for new or old, if you know what I mean?

Before 1991.

Once you hit '91, '92 you start having new school rappers like Nas, Pac, B.I.G.

Yeah but that raises the question as to what rappers like Drake, J Cole and Kendrick are supposed to be considered:patrice:
They're a different generation of new school, wouldn't make sense to call them new school in a decade or two

The style would have to be much better. Its not.

Even basketball is only considered to have 3 eras and its been around way longer than rap.
