If you have the bread I say the new 13 inch macbook pro with the 8gb. Its actually kinda future proof for at least 5 years and the display is crazy and the weight is perfect. Just picked one up.

its like 1500 without the care plan 1750 with i think. See if you can get a discount thru school or job is possible. You can always upgrade the RAM later and get the 4GB version.

I think the wonderful thing about mac is that you can run all the other OS-es on it; Be it a variation of Linux or Windows 7/8 32 or 64 bit. I mean you could do hakintosh but it lacks the ease of virtual box, bootcamp, vmware virtual machines...etc.
