I'm off the opinion skill never and should never have mattered.Bingo . And cats from the south realizing they didn’t need nyc to blow anymore. The west, Midwest, and south always fukked with each other due to a lot of NYC elitism
But then the thirst for quantity and hits over quality really began and you had the split with mainstream and underground around that time too
Money and lack of skill started to become more paramount as radio hits didn’t care about that
I feel the same way about rock music, they push skill over effect and usually they kick blacks out doing that
And the hyper fixation on "technical" skill is what took jazz from a brand of musics blacks loved to a dead genre only old whites and blacks dependent on them play.
If the music emotionally connects and is catchy thats all I need thats a hit, it helps to have a meaning but I never felt that is necessary.
Thriller doesn't mean anything, but doesn't stop it from being a great song, you know.
