You're right, it is PEMDAS but like someone earlier said...

Parenthesis first: 6/2(2+1)
No Exponents
Then multiply: 6/2(3)
Finally division: 6/6 = 1
No Addition
No Subtraction

Addition and subtraction have the same precedence.

You work them from left to right. One doesn't go before the other in every case. They always work from left to right.
