I judge art by what I would like to see up on my wall. That 2nd painting is boring as hell and belongs in a retirement home. The 1st has vibrant colors and inspires thought. It would look great behind my bar.

Most realism is boring as fukk to me. I'm no specialist in arts but I go to museums and exhibitions quite often, but why would I want to go there to see something "real", meaning something I could see anyday? Realism for me is just about displaying technical skills in REPRODUCING something that exists, for me real art is CREATING something new, art is an escape for me. That's why I've always been more of an abstract guy, alongside surrealism (favorites include Basquiat, Dali, Magritte...)

Depends what you mean by "better"
The second one is obviously better drawn but the 1st one is better in its "meaning" and its "allegory".
