We're not talking about a 28 year old Wiggins though, the Cavs won the title last year with Love averaging 8.5ppg on 36% and the series swung their way when RJ got playing time because the Cavs needed more wing players to matchup.
No one saw the Warriors coming for them to not make that trade. Getting Love was the right decision since the Spurs was looking like the leaders in the west, especially after how they smoked the heat in 5 games.
They won their championship, but they may have been in this position regardless since it's pretty clear the heart of the Cavs is Kyrie/LeBron. They made it to the finals with Love playing 4 playoff games in year 1, they won the title with him missing a game which forced Lue to insert another SF into the lineup with LeBron and when he did play he averaged 8.5ppg on 36%. Everyone is now saying they need a wing player to matchup with the Warriors, they had one though, they just never gave it a chance to even see how they looked together.
I'm a big proponent of keeping flexibility that comes with having players on rookie contracts (@houston911 as well), and I fully understand why the Celtics aren't trading their young guys fro PG / Butler.
I don't think it was the right decision, I didn't think it was at the time, even when they won the title Love had so little impact outside of 1 play. They should have at the very least see what Wiggins looked like with LeBron + Kyrie and made their decision based on that.
The Celtics made the right decision not trading the pick for Butler/George.

They need to move love and pieces for pg or Butler. Then they will probably go get Bosh on the cheap and hope he doesn't die. 
Paul George, Melo i would even try to trade TT for Dwight Howard.
