Texas and it’s not even close
Louisiana hot second
I can't lie, my natural bias says Texas.

It's a breadbasket state like Cali, so most shyt grows here. Each big city has its own flavor and you can get damn near anything high quality. Plus the "ethnic" spots don't have to weaken their spice levels to appeal to locals.

HTown/Dallas got West Africa and East Africa covered respectively. Middle Eastern food is strong in both. Dallas got Korean and Indian while Houston got authentic Chinese and Viet on lock. Both strong with Thai. High end steak joints, authentic Mexican plus TexMex. Homegrown Czech & German kolaches, BBQ etc. Worse Creole/Cajun than Louisiana but clearly #2. Soul food is solid but most Southern states got that.

Weakness - Caribbean, Italian and high end French. They do that better up north and in Florida for sure. Caribbean and Italians never migrated here like that for some reason.

Texas diversity is insane. I think Louisiana is best for its uniqueness and no state is like Louisiana. Texas compliments that with the wide range of diversity it offers. I like Florida but I think Texas easily beats Florida in food.

Fine dining is where other regions outshine the south tho but cities like Houston and Dallas are catching up.

How can there be a best food state when ppl have different tastes, preferences, etc?

I would say that it would be better to discuss one's own favorite food city and detail what specific cuisines, dishes, items one likes.
Facts, If someone loves Mexican food, LA/Cali would win

Are we talking about the region with the best food, or the most concentration of different types of food.

Best Region: The South; Soul, BBQ, Cajun Creole, Caribbean
Best State: Texas; BBQ, Steak, Mexican, Cajun Creole
Best Concentration: NYC, LA, Chicago... they got the most spread of restaurants, no contest

Louisiana>>>>......
This,
I feel like Cajun, Creole is the best original/american/regional food this country has to offer.
Everything else is more about the number of food options that they have imported from other places rather than any culinary innovations that they have themselves contributed to the world (#NYC saying they have everything, but the most original new york food is what?Hotdogs are from Germany, Pizza Italy, etc etc, What did new york create, Waldorf salad? :mjlol: ) No different from london having shytty food except for what the immigrants over there make.

NYC only because it has everything you could want and you don’t really have to travel that far to get it.

I honestly can’t say.

Cali overall is hard to beat for anything outside of Southern food:
Bay Area for seafood (as good or better than the Northeastern states imo), SD for Italian (their Little Italy is legit legit), OC for Asian, European and Mexican, Valley for Middle Eastern then LA for in-between and fusion.

I’ve been on that Middle Eastern wave lately, don’t think any state does that better than Cali as all three of the state’s regions do that very well.

Reminds me I got to try this place out next time I’m in SD:
