The key to In-N-Out is lowering your expectations. I knew going in the fries weren't going to be great but the burger would be solid. I didn't get the full experience though because I was mid-diet when I first tried it (so no Animal style fries, got the double double with no bun, etc.). Shyt was good though and I honestly liked the fries.
Five Guys might have the best fast food burger out there though.

I went to five guys a few months ago and was caught off guard by how bad it was. You have to eat your burger within 5 minutes or the buns get soggy.

I haven't had In & Out that seems to be more of a West coast thing outside of certain parts of Texas.
5 Guys makes a decent to good burger. The fries are greasy trash though.
5 Guys is a little over priced too, nearly 30 bucks for a burger, some soggy azz fries, and a drink is hard no for me.

A lot of the highly touted Cali food don't really be all that good, every time I go to LA with my wife to see my in laws I'm always disappointed by the food. They all come out here to Texas and love the food though.
