White bible college steals a Black woman's song. They go viral for their "version" of the stolen song. The original creator on their necks.

And I’d bet my life people from all walks of life have been singing that song in churches for 250 years not giving a damn who wrote it or what they think they’re owed for the inspiration.

John Newton (a white slave ship captain) wrote the song in 1772 and was credited and compensated for it at the time he wrote it.

I know who wrote it, I specifically picked it.

Did he get royalties whenever someone else performed his hymnal to the Lord in their church?

Did he claim exclusive performance rights at the feet of Jesus?

I may get lit up for this but the church always been stealing shyt since day one. Most of the churches I been too had a remix of a song that either was heard in another church, or viral.

The rightful owners and so forth can't really say much, because gospel and worship. Meanwhile, this pawg out here making heads fallout, and now it's a problem :why: . Why not have the same energy all over the platform. Otherwise it's all pathetic because at the end of the day, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO SPREAD THE WORD AND NOT FIGHT OVER IT!

Then you would also in understand copyright laws involving royalties as is currently understood would not be a thing for over another century at which point the song would already have been considered public domain and the family could not seek profits and restitutions from that song.

This woman has the right to be paid properly for her intellectual property. It doesn't matter if it's a spiritual song. She has the right to seek renumeration for her work.

in this century a black woman made sure she is to be owed for her creativity and labor which is her prerogative when she made sure everyone knows the song is credited to her. the artist isn't blaming the audience, she's holding the plagiarists responsible for ripping off her work.
