Japanese people follow something called "tatemae", which means that they are super polite in public, so you won't know if they're racist or not 99% of the time. I don't even worry about that and I live over here.

They're much more likely to judge you based off of how you present yourself though (your style, weight, grooming standards, facial hair, tats, etc.) If you look clean, fit, and stylish, you'll be fine. Bonus points if you're polite, at least try to follow their customs, and can speak some of their language.

Any "racism" from the Japanese is literally a walk in the park and child's play compared to the bs we face on the daily in America, UK or Canada. I've never had any vibes from Japanese people I've met. Of course I'm not saying ALL Japanese just love black folks lol, but unlike China which is blatantly anti black, I've yet to hear any true horror stories out of Japan that would keep me away. Not to say it doesn't have its challenges, but it's one place I'd consider moving to in Asia, especially in my line of work.

And you're right, from what I've been told as long as you clean up nice and are respectful, you're pretty much good to go. That's another thing these cac dudes can't stand - they hate that we're not judged and mistreated out there compared to fukking China where they just ass kiss white folks and hate us for no reason.
