I was joking lmao. But I agree. It's easy to see where it works. People can be very devout. Some so devout that they're willing to believe anything their leader of that particular church, temple, synagogue or wherever will say. You get an immoral man (or someone with vices and flaws, depending on how you wanna tell the story) who sees and understands that, put him in a position of power within that community, and you have a bunch of dirty secrets, skeletons and even more questions waiting to be exposed.
