Judge pleads guilty to ethics violations in exchange for suspension
LOUISVILLE, Ky. —Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Olu Stevens agreed Monday morning to plead guilty to seven ethics violations in exchange for a 90-day unpaid sentence.
Stevens, who railed against a prosecutor in provocative, racially charged posts on Facebook faced a disciplinary hearing Monday.
The deal came just as Stevens was set to face trial before the Judicial Ethics Commission.
Stevens, who is black, was facing misconduct charges for suggesting that the white prosecutor was nefariously seeking to seat all-white juries.
Stevens admitted to ethics wrongdoing and will be suspended 90-days.
The Judicial Ethics Commission voted 6-0 to approve a deal that will allow Stevens to plead guilty in exchange for a 90-day suspension.
Commonwealth's Attorney Tom Wine had asked the Supreme Court for a legal opinion on whether Stevens had the authority to dismiss a randomly selected jury panel because it lacked minorities, prompting Stevens to launch the attack.
Experts said his cause was worthy and that Stevens shined a light on a racial imbalance that has dogged the criminal justice system for generations. But his personal attack on a prosecutor for requesting an appellate opinion could cross an ethical line and threaten to overshadow the issue that he attempted to highlight, they said.
Stevens said he is glad to be moving forward.
As for the case where Stevens dismissed the jury because of its lack of adversity, both sides made oral arguments before the Supreme Court in June. We are still waiting on an opinion.
