Rev. Sharpe-tongue Makes Mistake Of Attacking Tony Dungy
Shannon Sharpe embodies everything that is wrong with sports at the moment. He’s addicted to Twitter, simple-minded race-baiting and politics. He is the North Star for many of the black athletes using rare cases of police criminal misuse of deadly force to launch side-hustles as television racial justice evangelists.
Rev. Shannon Al Sharpe-tongue is the athletic gold standard for the Black Lives Matter movement. There’s virtually nothing he won’t say or do in pursuit of retweets, likes and follows.
Need Rev. Sharpe on set in do-rag, pretending to smoke a blunt and drink Hennessy? No problem.
Need meme-friendly Al Jolson-like facial expressions and voice inflections? Just say the word. Rev. Sharpe has you covered.
But where Shannon Al really excels is in concocting twisted, illogical racial analogies. Let’s say a diva wide receiver like DeSean Jackson makes a fool of himself quoting Adolf Hitler as he begins his audition for a post-playing-career job as a race-baiting sports TV studio host. It’s in these moments where the Hall of Fame tight end transforms himself into a mix of Al Sharpton and The Jerk’s Navin Johnson.
Take a look at this performance by Sharpe Wednesday on the set of Undisputed. He somehow managed to deflect attention away from Jackson’s anti-Semitic rant by not-so-subtly disparaging Tony Dungy. Don’t take my word for it, listen and look for yourself in the link below.
“In situations when whites say something bad in the NFL, they get Tony Dungy. Mr. Tony, he’ll clean up everything,” Sharpe said. “Where is our guy? Where is the person we have if a black slips up that’s in the Jewish community that can come to our defense like they send Tony Dungy out to go to everybody else’s defense?”
This pissed me off. I am a huge Tony Dungy fan. I aspire to live my life with the kind of class, purpose and impact as Tony Dungy. Sharpe insinuates that Dungy is a puppet of white NFL ownership.
Dungy, to the best of his ability, tries to be a puppet of God. That’s his life mission.
After that, Dungy has used his success in football to empower Lovie Smith, Herm Edwards, Mike Tomlin, Jim Caldwell and Leslie Frazier. Dungy used his impeccable reputation among NFL ownership to help Michael Vick re-enter the league after incarceration.
What the hell is Sharpe talking about? Dungy offering a mild defense of Drew Brees’ comments about standing for the national anthem?
Does any rational person think quoting Hitler is the equivalent of saying you disagree with people kneeling during the national anthem? Drew Brees and DeSean Jackson don’t exist on the same planet. One is an example of manufactured fake controversy and the other is an example of willful ignorance laced with bigotry.
These TV race reverends do not remotely understand people of religious faith.
To the best of his ability, in all endeavors, Dungy operates like a Christian. That’s why he defended Drew Brees. Dungy’s instincts are to align his actions with his faith more than his race. Sharpe pretends to align his actions with his race.
The use of the word “pretends” is intentional. It’s all a TV act. All of it. The do-rag, blunt, Hennessy and everything else are props. The on-camera performance has no connection to Sharpe’s reality. It’s a social media-inspired gimmick.
The problem is its toxicity.
I was appalled three years ago when Sharpe blindsided his alleged best friend Ray Lewis for dropping to both knees and praying with the Baltimore Ravens during the national anthem. Take a look at the clip linked here.
Ray’s history is more complicated than Dungy’s. But I do not doubt the sincerity of Ray’s faith and that he tries to align his actions with that faith. Sharpe’s unprovoked attack on Lewis landed like a sucker-punch.
Sharpe is a self-elected racial gatekeeper supported by the puppet masters at Twitter. He’s a role model for many of the black athletes looking to launch television careers when their playing days are done.
It’s a bad standard. Sharpe’s rhetoric is irresponsible, divisive and inauthentic. We wonder why DeSean Jackson and Stephen Jackson unwittingly lurch into anti-Semitic propaganda? There’s no mystery here. They’re following their leader and primary defender.
