He gets touted as one of the best but he never says anything witty or poignant to bestow those things about him.

I think people fell over themselves with his narrative; calling out Nas as an intellectual, retirement and never writing his raps down.

:yeshrug:

I agree with this sometimes, Jay's reputation precedes him and he gets passes for doing things other rappers get knocked for all the time.

In reality, 20% of his catalog are lyrical gems and masterpieces and 80% is bragging and stunting just like most rappers, but he doesn't get dinged for it

Drake is the elephant in the room. He was never a lyricist and never nice. Bit his flow and had his bars written. Straight up Make-A-Rapper.
Drake can definitely rap but ever since the pusha beef it's with an asterisk, but make no mistake, the execution is flawless and effortless

Canibus.

Like he has some dope one liners, but I found him to be one dimensional lyrically. I'm shocked that people are surprised his albums or music never lived up to the hype. Wyclef was blamed because he gave him some weak production, but in reality, it didn't matter who was behind the boards. Canibus wasn't the songwriter or lyricist that he was made out to be. Take Big Pun for instance. He was versatile and could give you a song about anything while still maintaining the skill and rhyming ability. He created a great album and was successful while still maintaining the skill. He even had a song with Clef and still went in. Pun could wow you, make rappers afraid to get on a song with him, but was still versatile enough lyrically to give you a "Still Not A Player" and a "Punish Me" and then go and make a "Glamor Life" and "Dream Shatterer" on the same album.

Pun is an underrated writer he was just lacking somewhat in presence. Canibus had that presence but Pun was the better pen. If Pun had Fat Joe's presence he would be in GOAT convos.
