Timbaland’s stuff was a brand new funk
. She caught lightning in a bottle with Timbaland

Timbaland
Missy
Static Major & Playa
Ginuwine
Magoo

Im
Glad that JD and Puff didn’t do it.

Timbaland had that potent product that was strong enough to attract Jay-Z who has used Tim for most of his albums.
I believe Biggie would have rocked with them too had he lived and inevitably left Bad Boy. His flow would have been a perfect fusion with Timb's sound...Aaliyah singing hooks, and Missy on the middle verse

Biggie would have rode those beats
.

We could have gotten Jigga and Biggie going back and forth on his beat

Grooming aside, her first album was a classic. R Kelly is a sick pedo but I can listen to that album from start to finish with no skips.

One In A Million was a great album, reintroducing Aaliyah as a young adult. Timbo and Missy did their thing.

Her eponymous third album was straight trash. If you don’t count her singles from there, it was pretty bad. I was listening to it the other day and I thought “damn, her death really made me overlook how terrible this album was.”

Granted, it was five years between ‘One In A Million’ and ‘Aaliyah’, and she had done movie soundtracks in between, but her final album was so poorly put together. And that’s because there was no cohesion and too many different producers.

And Timbo only produced three tracks on her final album. SMH.

Also, "Are You That Somebody" was such a gigantic filler hit that boosted her status and bought her time...so to speak

Kinda like Giannis living off his 'chip in Milwaukee from 4 fuccin years ago.

^Best analogy I can come up with...it's late. You get the point.

And “Try Again”. And to a lesser extent “Back In One Piece.” That’s why I was so disappointed when her final album was released. All those great single soundtracks prior to the album coming out and this was it?

The album initially underperformed when it came out. I remember because Alicia Keys was running the show during that era and Beyonce wasn’t solo yet. Ashanti wasn’t big until a year later.

So this was meant to be Aaliyah’s big comeback but everyone was like :yeshrug:

After she passed away, then the album topped the charts but listening to it now, you can see why it struggled initially. Not enough Timbo. Way too much filler.

Summer 2001 was a stacked period for R&B music. So many heavy hitters were dropping albums. Janet. Destiny's Child. Mary J. Then of course, Alicia Keys debuted that summer and killed it. If you compare her to her peers like Brandy and Monica, Aaliyah was doing fine. She was transitioning into the new millennium a lot better than they had done. Self-titled wasn't a HUGE seller but it sold like 170k the first week, which was her highest first week sales. And the week before she died, it was nearly gold. The problem was..We Need a Resolution wasn't a huge hit but that one underperforming song had that album sitting at gold. She was fine.

Self-titled was an album people had to appreciate over time. Seeing how much it has influenced all these young millennial/generation Z artists, it's hard to deny the impact the album had on music. But, it was definitely abstract.
