We all know and acknowledge that Eminem came up with the song Stan and that it was a huge hit. Nobody is disputing that. But Eminem did not start calling obsessed people stans.

I've been around these message boards since before nasbbs and don't recall anyone using the word referring to an obsessed person. I'm not saying it didn't happen but Nas is who made it popular in the way we use it today.

So yes. Obviously without the song Nas could not refer to it, but without Nas the word wouldn't be used today.

People were calling people Stans before ether was ever out and nobody thinks about Nas when they say Stan in 2017.

The pop kids who were bumping "Stan" back then would be confused if you used the word 'stan' in a sentence in 2017. They've probably forgotten the word and song to be honest.

Nas created the hip hop meaning behind that word and it's become part of everyday hip hop language.

Everybody heard Stan white or black back then. Y'all trying to recreate history like nobody black knew any songs Eminem released in 2000.

Stan is a character from an Eminem song. Not just any eminem song, his biggest song ever. :skip:
This song was a lead single to a 32 million copy selling hiphop album :skip:
Everyone in hiphop knew stan = crazed fanboy the after it dropped.
Next coli posters are going to be talking about NaS coining the whole dictionary and the elements of the earth and shyt
This shouldn't even be a question. It's OBVIOUSLY Eminem and you are delusional if you believe otherwise
shyt is hilarious.
Eminem, a well respect rapper in his prime,at the peak of his acceptance by the hiphop community, drops a classic rap song and video about a crazy fan name stan,it blows up everywhere,is huge on every platform but people know it from a battle record by nas?

We all know Dark skinned Jermaine was a lame because of Biggie or Jay if you're younger. Nobody is calling lame people Jermaine. It's not a popular term. If Meek called Drake dark skinned Jermaine in a song and everybody started using that term referring to lames, then Meek would get credit for making it popular
Not even remotely the same as the stan situation

It's the Stan Lee and Steve Ditko/Jack Kirby dilemma. Stan Lee produced the concepts, that are the basis for the art to be depicted. Then Steve Ditko/Jack Kirby implements the ideas that Stan Lee produced then brings them to life. One is not more important than the other, but, one would not exist without the other but not vice versa which is why Eminem should be solely credited for the term, 'stan' because without him making the song Nas wouldn't be even able to use it for his song in the first place. Yes, Nas coined the term but he did not create the term and how it is used Eminem did that originally, Nas just made it a thing.

That character is a microcosm of what stan was.
a character that took up a few bars in a song.
Stan was the title and subject of the song, complete with videos and an actor playing that character plus major award show performances.
