Was it classical arabic? I heard people say the same about chinese you need total immersion. I knew an arab who I was close network associates with for a minute and he was telling me it wasn't really hard and I could learn it. Said it's harder to read it than speak it but idk.

Yeah the nasalization and utilization of the throat in a lot of foreign languages is annoying.
