Someone that was secretly signed to a major and built up a following with their help , then later 'announced' they signed to them like they weren't already

Edit: there's more to it I'll add later

Duckworth is the leafiest of them all

Personally I don't care if you're helped out. All artists at some point are helped out and developed. It's a great thing, actually.

Just don't play the "hip hop savior" card. It's so annoying because that's what matters now, instead of the actual music. People fell for Duckworth and J Cole because of their grassroots b*llshyt, not because of their music (don't blame them - it's trash af without marketing)

i think chance the rapper, travis scott, and asap rocky are great examples of an industry plant because they literally came out of no where. Now regarding drake, he was secretly signed and being pushed as independent but so are a lot of artists these days, Kendrick and logic are other examples.

Travis Scott came through Kanye and Chance the Rapper had Twista on his buzzing mixtape. So clearly, they're part of the cosign machine.

Rocky, however, came out of nowhere, and it was beautiful :banderas: That's how I know the music spoke for itself.

Do you think Game was destined for stardom before he link up with 50?

Yea, they were putting him with Dre and all those top producers for the Documentary either way. When Game started appearing the message wasn't "this is a new underground rapper that's getting so popular that Interscope has to listen to the people and sign him and give him a budget", the message was "this is Dre's newest signing, he's about to work with the top names in the industry and be made a star"

Game is the last of the rappers who were groomed for the major label debut.

Dude sat on the shelf, for a few years.... You can peep him in G-Unit videos back in 03....til it was his time in 2005

There is no time/money to be doing that anymore, the game moves way too fast for labels to be signing cats, and then letting the site for 2-3 years before putting them out there.

So you're left with few options when it comes to people who have the look/sound but the music aint there yet.

At this point in the game all these lil nikkas and niglets are plants. You aint getting ya stuff posted on Complex or Fader unless you plugged in.

Last authentic rapper to come in the game and grind it out was Future.

That's how it's always been, all the rap blogs have been biased as to who they like....that's not exactly a secret

Future isn't even the latest from the Gucci tree...Migos,Young Thug,Makkonnen all came after him.

if you really want to talk grind it out.... Tyler the creator went from posting on hypebeast forums to his own TV Show,Clothing line.... and just last weekend...this
