Katherine Kurtz. She wrote the Deryni fantasy series, that's set in England circa 1400s - 1500s, if memory serves me correctly. The deryni are a race of beings born with magic based powers, and they're being persecuted by the catholic church. I learned a lot about catholicism as a teen from reading those books. It's a fantastic series.

Tim O'brien for nonfiction. I love all his books about the Vietnam War because he has a very unique/engaging style of writing.

All time - Oscar Wilde - Picture of Dorian Gray

Right now - I really like Margo Jefferson's writing, especially as a critic. Her new book Constructing a Nervous System is good. Love her use of language, very reminiscent of Baldwin and Morrison.
