The illustrations of the book covers where GENIUS marketing for kids. Use to be at the school book fair and the public library looking at the covers like 
they really grabbed you.

I’m reading them to my son now. Got the first 4 off Amazon. A lot less scary than I remember. Read the werewolf of fever swamp and the werewolf don’t even show up till the last chapter. 
These and Indian in the cupboard are what really got me into loving to read.
