Cringe cuts. I think that Roll Deep and the Godfather of Grime, Wiley himself were the biggest offenders. Dope ass mixtapes and radio sessions but then drop some shyt like this for the album.

The thing is I don't even remember most of these pop cuts being popular with the mainstream either. Course' I don't live in the UK but followed Grime religiously in the early 2000s.

The Avenue went Number 11 and the Album went Silver so it was popular. This revisionist history is unfair on him.

Wiley doesn’t get enough praise for his ability to make hits (when he feels like it) using different genres. He definitely understands music in this sense.

He never abandoned Grime either unlike Kano or Dizzee, he fulfilled his Label obligations and made sure he groomed new talent and was active within the scene.

Wiley even speaks about it in his book, his plan was to sign, take the advance, drop the Pop Song the label wanted and then go back to Grime.

He just rinsed and repeated this method and he admits it kept him afloat. Wearing My Rolex made him more money than years worth of Grime.

He was trying to use the pop songs as a way to grab a new audience but it didn’t work.

Wiley seems to be able to make pop hits quite easily tbh.

I remember heatwave.

He knows how to make to structure a hit very well and how to incorporate different genres.

For example:

The Avenue - 80s Pop Sample
Wearing My Rolex - House Sample
Boasty - Reggae

All hits but different approaches.

fukk right off. The avenue was great.

I don’t remember this Kano one. I’m actually annoyed you brought it to my attention!

(Not you Pegasus)

Problem with UK hip hop is once it hit late 00’s early 2010’s it just didn’t know what it wanted to be anymore. I used to love homegrown stuff then grime came and I thought “oh shyt this works” then this drill shyte came along and the culture behind it fukking stinks and is one of the reasons the UK and it’s youth are fukking trash.

I only listen to old UK hip hop now and somewhat ‘novelty’ stuff like Pete & Bas or The Northern Boys who I saw live last month and was as good as ANY hip hop artist I’ve ever seen live.

The rhetoric that UK hip hop has to be grimes and real and from the streets is fukking crap that needs to fukk off.

Every artist has shyt songs. No matter where they are from. But the his Kano one is proper embarrassing. Too many people set out to emulate others instead of pushing their own sound.

You can fucc right off because those drill youts did something that not my generation, nor yours or the previous ever managed to do and that was actually build a music industry for themselves that didn't live and die off the most successful talent of that generation.

You lot have 0% idea what UK Drill has done for UK music and it's fuccin jarring.

There's B and C tier Drill rappers getting major label record deals and being able to eat off their music. That NEVER happened with Jungle, Garage, Grime, Dubstep nor UK Rap.

You're right man but don't forget mcs like dizzee and skepta made it possible even tho they had to release shyte to get heard overseas.

Someone had to do it, so the new wave could be themselves and still get heard.

The drill lot defo took it to a new level though... I never in my life would have thought I'd seen US artists catting our style in my lifetime.

Nah I hear you but this tune fukking went off in the uk. I think cos it had that retro 80s uk pop sound... It made it take off in the UK. I think it's a bad boy tune anyway tbh.

UK Drill hate is overdone but… I disagree.

A lot of that happened of the back of what UK Rap and Grime did. Grime’s resurgence in the Mid 10s is what opened up the doors for the next gen and they ate off that.

It’s way easier for Drill to sustain itself in the TikTok/Insta/Snap era and it’s easier for fans to connect/support genres in their purest forms. Streaming as well vs Physical albums etc.

Music can travel across the country and the world with much greater ease and without the Industry now meaning way more people can get a piece of the pie.

What Drill does need more praise for though, is longevity, the run has been longer than some of these other genres put together.
