it's not mediocre at all it depends on the plan. Some plans available are just as good as state employee insurance which one of the best around.

I don't know how your state works but usually if you don't make enough to qualify then you are going to be poor enough to qualify for state insurance in which you would be paying zero for everything..

I applied for AZs state insurance when my job wasn’t giving me insurance and they said I didn’t qualify
So I should have tried to get a subsidy at that point?

Just prey to god you don't actually have to use that insurance.
Nothing better than paying thousands of dollars every year in medical insurance premiums and never having to use it, and then having a medical emergency that requires you to see different specialists at different locations with different tests/processes that may or may not be in your network and that may or may not be covered by your insurance company
I know good people, with good jobs, who had good insurance, who did everything by the book that were bankrupted by a medical illness in the family as a result of all the fukkery in this industry
Your state should have Medicaid expansion if leadership aren't pieces of shyt
