The answer is; Killmonger made T'Challa a better leader understanding certain traditions aren't worth compromising your character for. It took Eric taking advantage of the culture T'Challa valued and opening his mind what the outside world could even do to Wakanda's.

It's like ya'll walked out of the movie anytime Eric wasn't on screen and went home after he died.
