Whoa.....so 5 MILLION people watching a show is not enough to keep it on-air?

Thats what I dont get, if no one I know or have ever met has one of those ratings boxes, how is this still being used to determine ratings.. Like if I had or knew how to get a box, I would buy cable and watch shows live, but since I dont count whats the point?

That's a different reasoning than "Oh I refuse to pay for cable" or "I don't like commercials so I'll just wait" but still, all of it has a cumulative effect on the shows that continue and the shows that are canceled. DVR does come into play but only to a certain point. I think it counts up to a week of the show's original airdate

I know people who don't have anything at all breh just on the strength of refusing to pay for tv period. They use apple tv and go from there. no antenna hook up for just basic channels of fox abc cbs or nbc. Plenty of network shows suffer from ratings too but CBS is normally the exception due to the fact that a lot of their target demo is older and has no problem paying for tv

Yeah man every network has a different standard and threshold. CW isn't as big as the other major networks so their standards are different. Like Arrow and Flash are hit shows but if either one of them were on CBS it'd be an issue.

Well it was on during the summer man, and it got terrible ratings even for a summer show. It's not about a show working better as much as its about how much is invested in it. If they aren't recouping then it gets the axe. Chuck is a great example of a show not recouping the initial investment but having a passionate fanbase so in order to keep it on, they kept scaling back the costs either by cutting cast members or cutting locations and WB gave NBC a nice deal to keep the show going. Plus they had some pretty obvious but ingenious product placement with Subway

A lot of good info being dropped in this thread, I will say this though. Things have gotten progressively worse since the 90's, in terms of not giving any shows a chance to build a fanbase. "X-Files" had 29 million viewers at it's peak, but in season 1 the ratings were all over the place:

Now imagine if Fox cancelled it after 1 season, like every network does nowadays. You never know what will eventually become a hit.

There is other factors that come into play, as far as shows getting cancelled. "Hannibal" has abysmal ratings but it's one of the most critically acclaimed shows on any network, so it gives some prestige to NBC.

I think the reason it's gotten worse since the 90s is because a network like fox was just starting so they needed to let things really reach an audience and were willing to take the time plus it helps if the bosses really believe in the show. Seinfeld had virtually no audience for two seasons almost 3 and cheers wasn't a hit out the gate either but the bosses believed in the shows and it helped that they were critical darlings so there was extra incentive to keep them around. But there's too much stuff to watch now in my opinion to just wait. It's not like cable where it's all subscription based so they can afford to keep stuff around like breaking bad and see it become a monster. Mad men has never been a huge show or gotten great ratings but it's a prestige show for AMC and they can afford to keep it around. In network the demands are different
