Had me dying when i first heard heard it.
We were in a bar we frequent for about the last 10 years in Cozumel on vacation
Some Mexicacs from California were there and were staying until after the first week of May.
we were chatting with them and they said they they were gonna stay until the Cinco De Mayo parties were over.

the bartender and every local in there just stopped ... and looked at them .
they were like, "we don't celebrate that shyt here ", the bartender was like "Coconuts.... ladies and gentlemen"
Whole room just busted out laughing.
Mexicacs looked like they were about to cry . Paid the bill and left a few minutes later .
that's when i asked about the coconuts term and they filled me in.
Said "them muthafukkas get a taste of America and think they better than everybody in Mexico , Fukk 'em!"

and apparently the only place in Mexico that celebrates Cinco de Mayo is Puebla

and they told me to never trust a mexican that can't speak Spanish!

Damn my ex gf great granny always called her great grand kids coconuts I never knew what that meant until now

in my experience when you ask the white ones they say theres no racism or racial problems on the island

The island is still kind of segregated. So while theres nothing outward blatantly, you have towns like Loiza (where Tego Calderon is from) on the coast that are 99% black and African decedent. There are a few coastal cities like that.


It’s a odd dynamic, but to answer your question not really. But the segregation all these years later is noticeable. The middle parts of the county are super mixed.
