From a purely musical perspective, Maxwell wins.
D'Angelo's music is really good but it's never blown my mind. It's standard vintage R&B for the most part.
Max on the other hand stretches out. His music is more lyrically and conceptually advanced.
He's the better singer and songwriter of the two.
The danger in that is that he sometimes operates over the heads of his fanbase.
There's a lot of advanced wordplay and unconventional concepts in his songs.
It takes R&B fans a while to wrap their heads around Max's albums.
Everybody loves the first Blacksummers'night (the Pretty Wings album) now, but when it first came out everybody dubbed it.
It took nikkas 10 years to realize Embrya was a masterpiece. Even still, the concept behind the album is lost on people.
Production wise, there's a ton of exploration and experimentation in his music.
IMO, Max is funkier.
D'Angelo probably gets the nod with most people because his music is simpler and therefore more accessible.
Also, D's "thuggish"/street image probably helps a lot with his accessibility. Max is a far more esoteric figure.
R&B fans are more likely to know a dude like D before we know a dude like Max.
