I write poetry and used to write some short stories, and often feel the difference between people who write and people who don't is just...the actual fact of writing. The stories are there. A lot (if not the majority) of writers use their own life in their writing. Some people I know can tell you all kinds of stories, but would never think of writing them down.
Obviously there's some technical stuff to deal with, and patience, but short stories are quite doable I would say for a lot of people as a start. Also I don't know how it is in the US, but writing is often seen as something "intellectual" that is only for certain persons. Probably because of how we are often first introduced to books, through school. And people often have this perception that you need to have read tons of books to be able to write. It helps obviously, but it's not a prerequisite imo. HH is what brought me to writing, not books.
That being said there are a couple brehs who write here, there's a thread somewhere on "creative stuff" people are involved in.
