Religion is a set of rules that lead to legalism, a relationship with God is not following a set of rules. It is simply relying on an omnipresent God, who supplies love through mercy and grace. We can't make generalizations about the entire church (all the Christian churches in the world) just because there a few preachers who pervert the Gospel and/ or pimp out the congregation by stealing money and 'selling' false hope. I was raised a Christian, but im at a point now where im not completely sureHowever African peoples have always been spiritual, in the sense of knowing there is a higher being and looking towards our ancestors for guidance. Cant speak on heaven, hell, or w/e your group believes in.

So you dont necessarily have to be religious, but if you're black and you reject spirituality all together you just ignorant, dumb, or both
