I think OP is speaking in reference to the ones who become political nutcases/weirdos. The ones that become so ingrained with politics they start becoming/sounding like conspiracy nuts.
There's a difference in having interest and gaining knowledge in politics compared to becoming a weirdo peddling conspiracies.
I know what you're talking about and this isn't how you want to get into politics and these are the people who honestly don't have deep political thoughts and treat politics like a team sport. Its not like they are sitting around reading Noam Chomsky or William F Buckley usually. They are dumb af most of the time and look dumb as hell if someone who can actually critically think challenges their zealous beliefs.
At one of my previous jobs, I worked in an area with all the IT teams. So you had networking, desktop support, mainframe support, etc all together in one place. This real dumb dude who was part of mainframe support was one of these dudes. Most people there followed politics in a healthy way but it's the workplace and it wasn't something you went out of your way to talk about at work. This dumb ass would be yelling on the floor about his political opinions every day and saying all sorts of ignorant shyt unsolicited like everyone wants to hear his dumb ass opinions about things. He definitely tried to say some sly

shyt too and a lot of the brothas around would check him to keep him in line.
But, yeah he was obsessed with politics but he was a loudmouth retard and didn't have any interesting thoughts on the matter and was one of the nutcases/weirdos you mentioned. I found out he was eventually fired some time after I left because he couldn't keep his dumb trap shut.
