It's mostly lower and lower-middle class folks that worship celebrities. Just like you hear folks thinking it's cool to be a cop or fireman, you know, glorified civil servants. Folks with money and means do not respect any of this nonsense.
I remember watching a documentary on JFK and it mentioned how JFK Jr. wanted to go into acting and his moms basically put the kibosh on it. She was a part of the power elite and didn't respect actors, musicians, or athletes at all. A lot of people with money or means do not respect these folks, it's mostly kids and people with too much time on their hands living vicariously through what they see on TV.
I also remember Paul Simon talking about how folks look at musicians for this and that, but it's really politicians and bankers that run everything.
