Why are people proud of car payments?

Its crazy on the job its a contest to see who can get into the most debt. Their logic nice car=alot of money but more debt is more control. Im not saying this as a flex but i have 2 cars that paid for not the newest model but its paid for. These people go get 60-80k worth of debt just try drive to work everyday.
