Islam's problem has to do with a lack of images/symbols projected to the outside world.

In essence, there are 3 intrinsic forms of cultural representation... language, images, and music... different societies utilitize these forms to varying degrees.

Music is universal, but it's apolitical. Language and images both have political value, but language is culturally specific, whereas imagistic representation is universal. I can't understand how the French communicate the idea of a tree in language... but I can recognize it in symbol.

Christianity is an image based culture. Islam is not. Think about how many times Islamic radicals have threatened artists for drawing images Muhammad. They are opposed to creating a likeness of God/prophet's in one's own image.

We live in a Christian world, as well as a world of cultural interconnectedness..... so symbology, as a universal form of representation, becomes critical. The Islamic world never really established itsself through symbols, and so cultural outsiders don't know what in the fukk they stand for.

TLDR: The Islamic world never really cared to articulate their values/beliefs to the outside world, so most people know nothing of the culture other then what they see in the media.

@Slaimon would you agree?

because many of them see it as the enemy of Christianity and in turn, falsely recognize it as a friend of the black man

but most people don't have a clue about the true history of Islam
1) who said it's the enemy of Chrisitanity? and ... how is being friend of the black man = something to fear?
2) the true history of islam , is more than what has happened in modern times -- -and historians, Muslims, and anyone who can read....... can know the true history.

This is a good post. Islam isn't an iconographic faith (by decree) in the same way that Christianity is. You also have to take into consideration that the powers that be in America ascribe to a religion that fought Muslims for the better part of 1,000 years.

I also think its because Islam is so culturally synonymous with Arabs and the Middle East. People aren't really privy to the fact that Malaysia and Indonesia are actually the largest Muslim nations in the world, but that doesn't fit into the narrative of the great "other" that is the Arab Muslim. Here in Metro Detroit we have a VERY large Muslim population so the culture clashes are really gone. We been doing the whole hookah bar thing since forever, Masjids are everywhere and some of the largest in the nation, seeing Hijabi is an everyday thing and literally we have had virtually NO incidents sense 9/11. And when we did it was some outsider or interloper trying to cause trouble.

I think the biggest thing is that most of the nation doesn't live around enough of them. Muslims are still somewhat a secret society to middle Americans.

It's funny because some of the most peaceful, insightful and open-minded people I have met are Muslim. The best part about it is that you could have a guy that REALLY knows his Quran but doesn't beat you over the head with it in the same way a Christian would.

I have lots of respect for Islam and Muslims as my faith cousins. Same for Jews.

White dominant society dictates perceptions on Earth..

At the beginning of White supremacy ( when Europe because civilized) ......... They hated Muslims ( especially black Muslims) Because it was them that created a civilized white society.................. It's sorta like hating your parents.

The when they wanted slaves from Africa.... The Muslim ones had no fear plus ( ONLY due to the areas they lived) the black muslims were more aware of cacs and trade n shyt... so were more defiant.
For the same reason.. that slave owners were like "NAw fukk that... Go trade to get the NON Muslim africans."
The reason that most Books and movies showing a reillious slave has a Muslim one ( Like Kunta Kinte From the book ROOTS )

Plus - islamic rebellions in the mid east, and Europe.

Plus - resources in the MID -EAST , you need a boogyman for war. Plus we (ameriicakkans ) created a couple crazy groups in the Mid east to deal with our enemies..... and now the Chickens are coming to roost on that shyt with fabricated terror organizations.

Plus most people only associate with their social group.

They don't know that probably the nicest most generous ( by far most generous) people they could meet might be Muslim. Where I live........ people deal with Muslims all the time and Don't even know it.

Word up. Gotta at least try to understand other cultures on their terms.
