Above the fray.
OP

Rest in Peace to Aretha Franklin. But her children were going through an ugly legal battle recently over wills and inheritances. Probably will have to fight record labels/publishing companies in the future over her catalog and rights.

And this is one of the greatest and most acclaimed singers in history. Who toured and sold records for decades.

Rappers are smart to cash in now, invest the money in other things and provide a level of financial security for their families moving forward.

World embraces hip hop music now, might not always be the case

Exactly! And you know they made all kinds of money off her music and other stuff after her death too. People are barely buying music, radio and tv are dead apparently, rappers are having to cancel shows over low ticket sales. Some of our legends who were active before streaming are broke now, were broke then, and does broke having their families fighting over money. They might as well get the money upfront and get it out of the way.

It's the smart move imo. Streams pay peanuts, movie soundtracks are dead, Hollywood is on strike anyways and dying, AI generated music incoming, and touring isn't what it used to be. The "I own my masters" is turning into the new Twitter LLC talk. Cash out if you can because it's about to get ugly in entertainment

This. Pretty much every major artist that passes away has a nasty fight over their estate. And most of these people’s relatives are buffoons that aren’t equipped to handle such important business dealings in the first place.

And like you said there’s no guarantee that their music will appreciate in value over time. An artist like Nelly has seen how fickle fans can be, and how taste can change in a second. Just because your music is in demand now doesn’t mean it will be 20 years from now.

These companies paying the big money up front are playing the long, long game but it's gonna take decades to break even in most cases, and it's a diversification strategy for their rich ass investors

When you start seeing some of the numbers they paying. $50 million, $100 million, it's an easy decision in most cases. That much money even safe, lower yield investments gonna have you and your family living comfy forever

The music may just not be timeless. Not everyone is Beethoven. shyt Beethoven is relatively recent compared to even older composers. Very few people are "timeless" musicians. I can only think of Michael Jackson right now for timeless music + star power to last the test of time.

Cuz everyone doesn't want to run around performing the same handful of songs year in and year out for money, shyt is exhausting and ends up making it harder for them to make new music. May as well "sell" the catalog for a set amount of years and not have to deal with the rat race :manny:
